Known for its excessive ornamentation and heavy, over-sized upholstered furnishings, the Victorian style reflected the formal living of the time. Woods were dark walnut, mahogany or rosewood and often machine-carved. Reproductions today use oak giving the style a more country look. The lines of the furniture with its tufted upholstery took inspiration from the Rococo styles of the 18th century.
