Victorian
The long reign of Queen Victoria in England enduring for most of the 19th
century set the standards for the Victorian era. Known for its excessive
ornamentation and heavy, over-sized upholstered furnishings, the Victorian
style reflected the formal living of the time.
Woods were dark walnut, mahogany or rosewood and often machine-carved.
Reproductions today use oak giving the style a more country look. The
lines of the furniture with its tufted upholstery took inspiration from
the Rococo styles of the 18th century.
