A sconce is a decorative wall bracket for holding candles or lights. When sconces are used properly, sconces can create an excellent look for a hallway, bedroom, or other room. This article will outline the different types of sconces availavle and will also provide details about each type. The article will then provide tips for decorating effectively with sconces.
There are many different types of sconces and sconces come in many different styles shapes and sizes. However, there are two categories of sconces that sconces generally can be classified into: candle sconces and light sconces. The following sections describes each type in more detail.
Candle Sconces: These types of sconces are used carry an display candles in a way that they can be mounted on a wall. The problem with most candles is that they need to sit on a table or shelf. With a sconce however, you can add candles to a hallway wall without the use of a shelf. Candle sconces can also provide the same affect as torches on the wall and create flickering light. Candles do not take up that much space and typically do not emit as much light as lights so they will partially light an area.
Light Sconces: These types of sconces, as their name suggests, are used to mount lights in a hallway or room. With wall sconces, you get signficantly more light than candle sconces. However, the look is a lot different, since the bulb or source of light is often much brighter. There are wall sconces that merely mount the light on the wall and there are wall sconces that have ornamental decorations.
If you are using one of the types of sconces, one effective technique is to use the sconce to highlight an area of the room or hallway. If you have an impressive piece of furniture, you may want to place a descreet sconce above it to highlight the features of that piece of furniture.
Sconces can also be used as a primary light source, but then you have to have powerful bubls. Most of the time you should use sconces as a secondary of accent light source unless they are in a hallway. Light sconces can serve as the primary source of lighting in a hallway, but not usually in other places. Candle sconces are almost always used as a secondary source of lighting.
Sconces can be very simple, or sconces can have elaorate metal work and stick out from the wall more more than two feet. The choice of sconce type depends on what you are seeking to accomplish. If you would like to draw attention to the sconce itself or create a medeival affect, you might want to purchase a large, ornamental candle sconce. Most people, however, choose to use sconces as acent pieces and prefer to keep them simple.
