A wonderful decor that has come back in style is the rustic look. This type of décor provides interest to a home while creating unique texture and warmth. Most people think of a cabin in the mountains with running water when they hear the words, “rustic décor”. While that used to be an accurate description years ago, rustic décor is now charm, sophistication, and trend all molded together.
Today, this type of décor includes beautiful fireplaces that have polished logs and wall accents made of twigs that are true masterpieces. If you want to create a look that is inviting while still having a feel of elegance, you can achieve this by doing some things to your home. Following are a few recommendations for achieving this:
Rustic furniture is highly textured. For this reason, if you add too much to a room, it overtakes the entire décor and feels heavy. Instead, choose a few pieces that have interest and incorporate them into your room. For instance, a distressed oak table or willow chairs would be perfect.
Use pillows, cushions, and throws to create the rustic look while adding a soft visual effect. Choose fabrics that are neutral tone such as rust, burgundy, dark green, or blue.
If you love a formal look for your home, you can recreate this with a rustic décor by using specific types of furniture. For instance, canopy beds offer a rustic feel yet are also considered chic. Latticework and patterned fabric also offer a touch of rustic while keeping a sophisticated look.
Anytime you use pieces to accent a room, choose items that will add just a touch of rustic. For example, mirrors and small accent tables are excellent options. Adding a coat tree in the entry way or a bench would also do nicely. Remember, you would be best to have a few smaller pieces that enhance the overall rustic look than a room full of heavy furniture that overwhelms it.
You can carry the rustic décor to the front or back of your property simply by adding garden benches, arbors, trellis’, chairs, and then setting them up around beautiful overflowing plants and flowers.
Choose a rustic dining table for your dining room instead of something new. You will find that a heavy, rich oak would be ideal. To keep a chic look but still staying with the rustic décor, ladder back chairs would be ideal
Use pictures and home décor that creates an inviting and warm feel. Baskets filled with pinecones or an old-style mirror hunger over the fireplace. Pictures can often be found at estate sales that are perfect such as a landscape picture of a meadow.
