The word decor has its origins from French, decorer, which means to decorate and Latin to beautify. When we speak of home decor, we are generally speaking about the layout and furnishings of the livable interior of the home. When people speak of home decor, they can be talking about a wide variety of items. Most people talk about accents or items that go on a floor, table, or shelf. However, home decor is a category that encompasses a lot of stuff. The following sections provide an overview of some common types of decor. Generally these types of home decor are divided up by where they go in relation to the home.
Tabletop / Counter Top: As the name implies, these are items that can go on the table or on the counter. They are mostly centerpieces and decorative items that are used around mealtime. they can also include accent pieces that go on top of a small table in the living room or items that can go on a desk in a study. In a study, most accents will be desk pieces, paperweights, or picture frames.
Wall Mounted: Wall mounted home decor items are anything that goes on wall. Common items in this category include pictures, tapestries, wall mounted candles, or other wall decorations. Wall mounted items can include items like hanging shelves, cabinents, or other small furniture pieces.
Furniture: This category includes what most people will associate with funiture and is an important component of an overall decorating scheme. Items here include, desks, tables, chairs, sofas, and beds.
Ceiling: this category is a smaller category, but encompasses items that are attached to the ceiling. Most common items here are lighting, fans, and ceiling decorations. Use items in this area sparingly.

Other: there are definately some items that do not fit nicely into any of the categories above.
